The Kurty D Show

016 - Transformations with Tim Curran

Episode Summary

This week I'm excited to share my conversation with my friend, Tim Curran. During his successful surfing career, he was one of the best surfers on the World Championship Tour, and at his peak was in contention for the world championship- and in this episode, shares how he discovered and developed his skills as an elite athlete, including sharing a powerful story about a professional surf heat at the Pipemasters that was competing with Kelly Slater, with the world title on the line. As the back end of his pro surfing career down, Tim caught another wave with music, which is when I first met Tim in 2002. Tim and I collaborated on a project called Red West that I was managing at the time- and Tim funded the band’s EP in 2002. The band was soon after signed to Atlantic Records. Then Tim started writing, playing, and recording and has released three albums and one EP so far. Fast forward, Tim re-invented himself again caught the third wave as a general contractor and real estate investor with his firm Deadwood Construction focusing on residential and commercial projects through Ventura and Santa Barbara counties. Tim was able to join me for an event at Kelly Slater’s Surf Ranch. This was an intimate retreat of investors, entrepreneurs, and service providers from the Southern California Startup Community that my firm Hunt Club Sponsored, along with Crosscut Ventures, Fenwick, Artium, and some other emerging LA tech firms. This show has a lot to offer anyone interested in surfing, following one’s dreams, reinvention, and staying positive and true to ourselves in the face of a crazy world, Tim brings so much experience, soul, and wisdom to the party, so this episode delivers the goods.

Tweetable Quotes:

“You never know- in 10 or 20 years that dream of yours could be something big- that you really worked hard for. So, dream big and work hard, otherwise, you'll never know!”

“I think what I could say is like, surfing was such a blessing. It is just jumping into the water, jumping into the water just like being baptized. So even if like, life’s crazy or stressed out, just like jumping into the water, catching a couple of waves, even if it’s not good, you just feel better.”

“You never think you’re good or you’re always striving to get good or better but I think when I was around 14 when I was able to start doing the tricks that I watched in the surf movies.”

“I am thankful for the opportunity. Music was definitely just a hobby that turned into something a little bigger than I ever imagined. it was more like a super far out dream to play music and do shows.”
