The Kurty D Show

023 - Connecting The Dots with Sam Adams

Episode Summary

This week I'm excited to share my conversation with my friend, Sam Adams, Co-Founder & CEO at dot.LA. We first met in early 2020- just six weeks before the world shut down due to Covid- just as Sam was launching dotLA- the hub for all things tech startup news and community in the LA tech market. Sam brings a world-class academic background and has parachuted into the technology sector as the first journalist for Thompson Reuters, strategy consulting at Activate, a boutique consulting shop founded by Mackinzine vets. This is an engaging episode that has a lot to offer anyone interested in tech startups, journalism, USC Trojan Network, and of course the magic that is connected to the places we love offer us. Lucky for Sam and me, we share a love of our home here in Southern California. Please go to KurtyD.com if you want to subscribe to my newsletter and see the special content I’ve created.

Episode Notes

What we covered:

Tweetable Quotes:

“Good journalism and media can play a catalyzing effect in the growth of an individual company.”

“Oftentimes, the simple answers will be misleading or inefficient.”

“Being immersed into a different culture and getting a different viewpoint on the world is such a treasure.”

“You have to trust people to be able to differentiate between (good and bad information), but the difficulty in doing so is a big problem.”

“Until we’re all living in the Metaverse, there is a crucial role for hubs and communities, and that’s the premise we’re operating on.”

“Keeping the focus on the mission and being flexible about how you can accomplish that because you’re always going to be bounded by the possible and the available. But I think as long as you hold on to your key guiding principles, then I think that’s the key to success there.”

“Being able to take some pointers about how to make everyone feel included and feel like everyone’s on the same page… is something that I’m trying to learn as much as I can.”
